Unlike termites carpenter ants do not actually eat wood. Use baits to kill ants that have gotten into the home. However ants in and around your home could be a sign of a nest close by. Ant baits can be purchased at most home and garden stores.
Frass may be found in crawl spaces under your home basement areas garage spaces and secluded locations. Once carpenter ants establish a nest you may see stage two. If winged ants come out of crevices around your home this is a strong sign that you have a serious ant problem.
